I (Mr.Gadiyar.Nagesh.Rao)
am a Consultant Colorectal surgeon, with 22 years of experience in Medicine
and Surgery.
I am a Consultant Colorectal surgeon
(employed by the East Kent NHS Trust since 1st Feb 2001), with a special
interest in Pelvic floor work, Rectal Cancer surgery, Laparoscopic
Cholecystectomy and Hernia repairs.
My base hospital is William Harvey Hospital
for the last 2.5 years. I do have commitments at Royal Victoria hospital,
Folkestone and Bucklands Hospital, Dover. I see my Private patients at BUPA
St.Saviours hospital, Hythe and at Chaucer Hospital, Canterbury.
My job involves looking after all colorectal
problems – Colorectal cancers, Inflammatory bowel disease and Pelvic floor
problems. I have a dedicated Pelvic floor clinic every Tuesday afternoon,
where I can perform Endoanal and Endorectal scan. This scan can deal with
Rectal cancer staging, Fistula imaging, Sphincter imaging and imaging of
Urinary stress incontinence. I am, currently in the process of securing
funding for Anorectal physiology to complement Endorectal scanning service.
The service involves a
multi-disciplinary approach involving me and the Urogynaecologist. I am
trying to model this service on the lines of Pelvic floor service at the
University of Minnesota, where I spent some time on a Travelling Fellowship.
I am a trained Colorectal surgeon, having done two years of research
dedicated to colorectal surgery at the University of Hull, culminating in a
Doctorate of Medicine. The title of my thesis is ‘Evaluation of
viscoelasticity of rectum in health and disease’. The research has led to
several publications and presentations. Details of this are in the enclosed
curriculum vitae.
I obtained my Fellowship of both the Glasgow and Edinburgh colleges in 1986
May, after receiving basic training in London and the Northeast of England.
Following my Fellowship, I secured my post-fellowship training in Aberdeen
(where I had the pleasure of working as both a General surgical and
Paediatric surgical Registrar), Bradford and finally Sunderland.
Following my Sunderland training, I decided to explore a different health
care delivery system. I worked in Jeddah for 18 months before returning to
UK for my Research appointment at the University of Hull.
My Specialist Registrar training has been in South Wales. I owe most of my
current skills and training to my period spent in Singleton hospital,
Swansea under Mr.N.D.Carr and Mr.J.Beynon, augmented by my period in the
Pelvic floor clinic at the University of Minnesota.
I have decided to have a website primarily because I want my patients to
have easy access to all information related to their condition and to know
all (well, almost all) about me before deciding on surgery. I have in this
website included my Curriculum vitae, Patient Information leaflets and some
specific information on Pelvic floor disorders and Rectal cancer surgery.
I have also included information about Hernia repairs. Although, my primary
interest is Colorectal surgery, I am quite competent with hernia repairs,
having worked under surgeons in the past with major interest in hernia
repairs. I currently tend to use a Plug and Patch repair using Bard Plug and
Patch. I do not believe that anybody should be subjected to laparoscopic
repair unless it is bilateral and recurrent hernia as per the NICE
guidelines (National Institute of Clinical Excellence).
I hope you find this site useful. Please let me have your comments, positive
or negative, and I will take it on board.
